Amy X Neuburg & Men got together in 1993 after she released her debut solo record, Songs 91 to 85, that same year. With a pop inspiration of XTC, her testosterone-fueled backing band of Herb Heinz, Joel Davel, Micah Ball, and J.T. Quillan were gathered under the moniker of Men. Following the release of their first album, Utechma, in 1995, comparisons of Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, and Karen Carpenter followed before Racer Records put out Sports Chips! Booty in 1999.
