AllMusic Review by John Bush

As expansive as a similar Gilberto Gil set from a few years ago, but charting the entire career of a Brazilian legend, Elis Regina's Livro Ilustrado includes all 21 of her original LPs (in the late-'90s remastered versions) for the combined Philips/Polygram empire, from 1965's Samba Eu Canto Assim! to 1979's Elis Especial. Box sets with such a huge reach (and price) are tough to recommend; neophytes would do better starting with a compilation or a single album (like 1968's Elis Especial), while fans are most likely have too much of this material already to justify a gigantic purchase. Polygram did an incredible job putting this together, though, so some from both camps may think it worthwhile to purchase a trophy collection like this.
