It's difficult to resist comparing Sweden's Streetwaves to the Strokes. Mouthpiece Jonny projects a jaded melodrama similar to Julian Casablancas, and the band's energetic rock songs rattle with similarly spare percussion and twin guitar efficiency. That said, the quartet -- rounded out by cool-named types like Badge, Björn, and Prago -- prove just as adept at synthesizing and repackaging their fashionable influences as their NYC peers. The bassline to "Know the Action" might nick that of "New York City Cops," but if both songs are pretty great, does it really matter? Besides, the Waves also have the amazing title track in their arsenal, which somehow cuts Boy-era U2 into herky-jerky Hellacopters riffing. If that's not enough to make you look forward to their full-length debut, then admire them for their denim and charming scarves.
