AllMusic Review by

Whether proceeding from ignorance or trickery, the import collection The Very Best of Dean Martin conspicuously skips most of Martin's best songs from the period it covers, the late-'40s and early-'50s Capitol years. Missing are his most popular songs of the era -- "Memories Are Made of This," "That's Amore," "Innamorata (Sweetheart)," "Return to Me (Ritorna-Me)" -- while the ones remaining function only as a second-rate primer on what made Martin special: the warm southwestern themes of "High Noon" and "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" presage his later country hits of the late '60s, while the urbane crooner appears on his versions of "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" and "You Belong to Me."
