AllMusic Review by

In 1935, the Casa Loma Orchestra under the direction of Glen Gray recorded 50 selections as radio transcriptions. The first 25 are on this CD. Recorded just prior to the birth of the swing era, which the Casa Loma Orchestra had preceded, this collection is an excellent all-round showcase for the band. Although there are a few pop vocals by Kenny Sargent, most of the material is quite jazz-oriented. The key soloists are trumpeter Sonny Dunham, trombonist Pee Wee Hunt, clarinetist Clarence Hutchenrider, and tenor saxophonist Pat Davis. Nine of the 25 numbers on this disc were not otherwise recorded by the Casa Loma Orchestra and the many highlights include "Stompin' Around," "Chinatown, My Chinatown," "Black Jazz," "Bugle Call Rag," "Blue Room," and "Song of the Islands." Recommended to swing fans.
