AllMusic Review by

Before he became a well-known film composer, John Barry worked as an in-house arranger for EMI Studios. The double-disc set The Hits & the Misses collects 50 recordings from the early '60s that feature Barry arrangements. There aren't many hits here -- most of the material is simply run-of-the-mill early-'60s pop, with syrupy strings disguising lightweight melodies sung by average singers (including Marty Wilde, Johnny Gavotte, Danny Williams, Adam Faith, and Gerry Dorsey, who would later be known as Engelbert Humperdinck). A handful of the songs are good period pieces, but most of this is primarily of historical interest for Barry collectors, and even they will find it more of a curiosity than anything.
