This Pausa LP from 1984, which takes material from the vaults of Capitol, has three sessions led by Duke Ellington's sidemen. Cornetist Rex Stewart leads his "Big Eight," awith trombonist Lawrence Brown, Al Sears on tenor, baritonist Harry Carney and a previously unreleased vocal by Joya Sherrill; drummer Sonny Greer is heard with "The Duke's Men," a septet starring trumpeter Taft Jordan, clarinetist Barney Bigard and altoist Otto Hardwick; and Louis Bellson heads the "Just Jazz All-Stars," which include trumpeter Clark Terry, trombonist Juan Tizol, Wardell Gray on tenor, altoist Willie Smith and baritonist Harry Carney. The talented musicians play up to their usual caliber, and the somewhat obscure swing-oriented music (some of which was reissued in the same era by Capitol) is easy to appreciate, a lot easier than this LP will be to find.
