Although The Devil in Miss Jones remains one of the most successful and influential adult films of the early '70s, composer Alden Shuman's original soundtrack defies expectations -- almost none of the motifs and clichés of '70s porn music are to be found here, and instead Shuman's score evokes nothing so much as that of low-budget European dramas of the period. Shuman's orchestral aspirations result in music that is serious if slightly melodramatic, and even compositions with more lascivious titles, like "Ladies in Love," are unabashedly romantic, not trashy -- only the funky "The Teacher" sports the kind of wah-wah guitar effects and a slow-burning electric grooves associated with soundtracks of this ilk. Whether that's a recommendation or a criticism is left to the listener.
