AllMusic Review by

Sure, this is a budget box set with a dodgy packaging job, but who cares? This stellar collection of well-known soul and funk tunes staggers in its range and depth, from Ray Charles and Sam Cooke to Dionne Warwick, Otis Redding, Gil Scott -Heron, the Temptations, the Supremes, and Aretha Franklin. And none of the tracks here are minor league or obscure. The producers can call it Black Power if they want to, but they might as well have entitled this set Black Sunshine, since what's here is all-killer, no-filler jams from the late '60s and early '70s. Add to this a super budget price tag and there's no way -- even if you have all of this material in other places -- you can pass it up.
