Larry Yanez is a native Yuman, a guitarist and synthesizer player known as the co-founder, with Carlos Nakai, of the quirky Mexican/Native American instrumental group Jackalope. Suenos (Dreams in Spanish) is "an audio interpretation of one night of fevered dreams and mental images." Using synthesizers, electric and acoustic guitars, piano and percussion, Larry Yanez creates a strange and surreal world of carnival-like sounds, ominous synth drones, chugging sequencers, bent notes and a recurring roller-rink organ sound. Each track has humorous and bizarre liner notes linking it to the particular dream that inspired it. The final tune, "Dogs in Your Dreams," is a tongue-in-cheek '60s-style acid-rock song, complete with zoned-out electric guitar, cheesy organ, and off-key vocals with strange but simplistic lyrics such as "Dogs in your dreams, always make me scream." Sueños is not for everyone, but should appeal to listeners who appreciate the bent humor and left-field music of the Jackalope albums.
