The label Plug Research keeps with its long-running habit of releasing unique, off-center electronic music with this self-titled debut album from Soulo. Shawn King and Nate Flannigan's work combines quarky electronic elements with tads of rock instrumentals, resulting in something very hard to nail down with adjectives. The album starts off with a confident, electronic hard edge but instantaneously calms down, fitting comfortably in its skin. Track seven resembles something that would be heard in an animated version of the Taj Mahal, while the following track is more strong on guitar, combined with sounds similar to Flipper on a talkative day. Despite the mysterious sources for lots of sounds on this album, it all strangely makes musical sense in the end. What's even most pleasing is that, though this album is a strong debut, there is a lot of room for King and Flannigan to challenge themselves and allow for room to grow.
