Soft-voiced singer/actor Bully Buhlan appeared in a number of German schlager films and comedies in the '50s in addition to scoring several hits in that country. Seid Ihr Alle Da is one of six anthologies Bear Family Records has compiled on Buhlan, in this case to compile his Polydor recordings from 1952-1956, many of which are taken from films such as Schlagerparade, Ball im Savoy, and Wunschkonert. Buhlan's frequent singing partner, Rita Paul, appears on a few cuts, but one of the best duets here is the playful "Es Liegt Wa in der Luft," which features the Trinidadian vocalist Mona Baptiste. Bear Family unearthed two previously unreleased studio recordings from 1954 for this package, including the lovely "Baby, Schlaf Ein," on which Buhlan's vocal floats above a delicate, cascading string arrangement. The songs come from the pens of European composers for the most part, except for a German-language version of the Four Lads' hit "Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen by the Sea." The mixture of lighthearted pop tunes and sweet ballads makes for an engaging and varied listen, and the orchestral arrangements are similarly varied, swinging one moment and coalescing into a Mantovani-like wall of strings the next (on "Weine Doch Nicht"). The frequent appearance of the accordion and the unabashed sentimentalism will remind American listeners where Lawrence Welk's style originated.
