AllMusic Review by

After the breakup of his big band and a sideman stint with the Casa Loma Orchestra, cornetist Red Nichols put together a new edition of his Five Pennies and returned to Dixieland. This obscure LP finds Nichols during 1944-46 leading a sextet that also includes clarinetist Heinie Beau and tenor saxophonist Herbie Haymer; the personnel and recording dates are inexcusably not given. Although not up to the level of Nichols' band of a few years later (when bass saxophonist Joe Rushton was a key member), this freewheeling unit is enjoyable enough, particularly on such tunes as "Should I," "At Sundown," "Whispering" and "Melancholy Baby."
