If classical composer, Paul Hindemith were born, oh, about 60 years later than he was, and if he loved indie-rock instead of "the old masters," then his pieces would probably sound like Ilium. This terrific little three-piece of bass, guitar and drums performs dense, melodic, complex and ultimately satisfying compositions that fall someplace between Captain Beefheart and, well...Paul Hindemith. Contrapuntal, interlocking parts--with the drums played in such a way that even they become part of the tapestry--make for a fascinating disc that will reveal something new with each listen. With touches of backwards tapes, abrupt tempo changes and odd time signatures, there's a lot of music crammed into five itty-bitty tracks. Look ma, no track listings!
