AllMusic Review by

This set of Beethoven's orchestral music is among the best things in Deutsche Grammophon's 1997 Beethoven edition. First, it has some of the best performances in Claudio Abbado's dramatically compelling Egmont incidental music and Orpheus' entirely danceable Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus. Second, it has some of the best of Beethoven's orchestral music that infrequently gets recorded: the incidental music to Die Ruinen von Athens, Die Weihe des Hauses, König Stephan, and Leonore Prohaska in superb performances by Bernhard Klee and Abbado. Third, it has recordings of pieces that have rarely if ever been recorded: the massive choruses celebrating the victory of the Allies over Napoleonic France, the sweetly rhythmic Gratulations-Menuet, and the grandly goofy Ritterballett in magnificent performances by Herbert von Karajan, Abbado, and Klee. Fourth, it has recordings of the silly orchestra dances that Beethoven wrote early in his career in elegantly stylish performances by Neville Marriner and a young Lorin Maazel. Fifth, it has recordings of several of Beethoven's least-known works: arias for the singspiel "Die schöne Schusterin" and a scene from his unfinished opera Vestas Feuer in superlative performances by Nicolai Gedda and Anneliese Rothenberger with Erich Keller and by Andrew Davis leading the BBC. Finally, it has brilliantly remastered sound by DG from already wonderful originals. Anyone with a deep love of Beethoven should hear these discs.
