With her self-titled debut release, Irish native Noella Hutton shows off a throaty, raspy voice that is comparable to Marianne Faithfull and Bonnie Tyler. Her vocals her compelling enough but, combined with insightful lyrics and winning melodies, she has created a work that resonates. Produced by ex-Talking Head Jerry Harrison, Hutton benefits from the cutting guitar work of Joe Gore from P.J. Harvey's band. "Between T & V" features a mournful melody with Hutton delivering a dramatic, insistent vocal about a breakup. Lyrically, she manages to strike a perfect balance between bitterness and resolution. Other highlights on this consistently striking album include "Trust," with her feral vocals cutting through the ethereal music and tumbling percussion, and "I'm In Love With You," a moody, sparse track that allows her sensual vocals room to ruminate on the wonder of discovery. Very impressive indeed.
