Why does the music of progressives (not least in Latin America) hew so predictably to a characterless international folknik sound, or imitate a few livelier, but equally generalized regional models? Given the political stance of the whole collection, it's a pity that virtually all the Sandinista stuff is blandly pretty at best (except for one charming Jimmie Rodgers knock-off), while the splendidly Nicaraguan cuts are mostly firmly apolitical. There's a moral here.
