AllMusic Review by

The long reign of Louis XIV, which lasted from 1643 to 1715, coincided with the middle decades of the Baroque era, and the works composed for performances at his palace at Versailles were a mix of ballets, operas, keyboard pieces, choral works, and vocal music that influenced French music over the next century. The roster of composers represented in Naïve's 2014 box set Musiques à Versailles includes such prominent figures as Jean-Baptiste Lully, François Couperin, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Marin Marais, among an even larger group of less familiar names that includes Sébastien de Brossard, Louis Marchand, Michel de la Barre, Jean-Marie Leclair, Robert de Visée, and Louis Nicolas Clérambault, and others. Drawing on recordings of historically informed performances by Michel Chapuis, Blandine Verlet, Hopkinson Smith, Jordi Savall, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Christophe Coin, and Christophe Rousset, to name only a few artists, Naïve has re-created the musical atmosphere and colors of Louis' court in this set, and even though this double-CD package only samples the repertoire, there's enough here to help new listeners appreciate the distinctive style and flavor of the period.
