AllMusic Review by

The Rosetta label specializes in prebop recordings from jazz women. This LP, Rosetta's initial release, features 16 different singers interpreting lyrics that in one way or another claim their independence from unreliable men: Martha Copeland, Bessie Brown, Maggie Jones ("You Ain't Gonna Feed in My Pasture Now"), Susie Edwards, Bernice Edwards, Gladys Bentley, Mary Dixon, Bertha Idaho, Rosa Henderson, Harlem Hannah, Lil Armstrong, Blue Lou Barker ("I Don't Dig You Jack"), Rosetta Howard, Ida Cox, Lil Green (the original version of "Why Don't You Do Right") and Billie Holiday ("Baby Get Lost"). The album is a good introduction to the classic blues singers of the 1920s and '30s.
