Bobby Darin was nothing if not versatile, and his hits ranged from elegant, jazz-tinged pop ("Mack the Knife"), artful folk-rock ("If I Were a Carpenter"), lush teen ballads ("Dream Lover"), to something akin to straight-out early rock & roll ("Splish Splash"), all of them delivered with an easy confidence that was a trademark of the best pop singers of his generation. This compilation has all of these hits, although not necessarily in the original versions, which makes things a little hit-or-miss here. Rhino's Hit Singles Collection sticks to the originals and makes a better choice for listeners looking for a single-disc Darin purchase.
