The 1973 Ross Hunter musical Lost Horizon remains one of the biggest disasters in Hollywood history, and its accompanying soundtrack ranks among the few black marks on the otherwise sterling resume of composers Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Written and recorded toward the end of the duo's long collaboration, their Lost Horizon score lacks the beauty and easy melodicism of their best work; what it also lacks is decent singers to perform their songs -- unwisely, the film's producers allowed the cast, which included Liv Ullmann, Peter Finch and Sally Kellerman, to sing their own material, and none manages to acquit themselves even remotely admirably. As a result, the movie itself lives on as a camp classic, but stripped of its visual accompaniment the soundtrack is merely a test of one's endurance.
