The educational liner notes, in both French and English, describe the types of balafons (all heard on this recording are wooden-keyed xylophones with calabash resonators), detailing the construction down to the instrument's construction, playing techniques, and more. The music of six ethnic groups are represented in this compilation: the Birifor, Siamu, Gan, Dagara, Dian, and Lobi African peoples. A sampling of traditional pieces from each of these groups is included, generally with accompanying percussion and vocals. With excellent sound quality, l'Art du Balafon is a warm, hypnotic, and melodic listen. It will go right along with those who cultivate tastes for gamelan and marimba music.
