An unsatisfying pioneering Northern soul set from RCA Records. These are failed '60s releases that faltered not because of lack of promotion but lack of creativity. Most are bad Motown derivatives and weak New York disco cuts. The inclusion of Paul Anka's "I Can't Help Loving You" doesn't help matters. The 20 tracks never jell as a unit. The best of the bunch include Roy Hamilton's "Crackin' up Over You," Ray Paige aka Ralfi Pagaan on Major Lance's "Ain't No Soul (Left in These Old Shoes)," Rose Valentine's "I Gotta Know Right Now," and Lorraine Chandler's lilting "I Can't Go On."
