In 1988 Rounder came out with three releases that feature modern music from New Orleans. This set has five songs apiece from a quintet led by pianist Ed Frank (with trumpeter Wendell Brunious, tenor-saxophonist Fred Kemp, bassist Erving Charles and drummer Joseph "Smokey" Johnson) and Ramsey McLean's Survivors (featuring the leader on bass, Charles Neville on saxophones vocalist Charmaine Neville, Reggie Houston on tenor, guitarist Steve Masakowski and drummer Herlin Riley). While Frank's music leans toward accessible hard bop, McLean's band ranges from a Sun Ra tune ("Rocket Number Nine") to R&B/funk suitable for sophisticated parties. It's an interesting and varied set.
