This excellent LP contains 16 studio recordings by Woody Herman's Band That Plays the Blues, dating from 1937-42. Since most of these selections (other than "Get Your Boots Laced Papa!") are rarely issued and the emphasis here is on jazz rather than Herman's ballad and novelty vocals, this LP is well worth searching for. Next to his clarinet, the top soloists are tenorman Saxie Mansfield and trombonist Neal Ried.
