Although a CD listed as being by Joris Teepe's Groningen Art Ensemble may at first glance appear to be a European group, the musicians (while teaching at the Prima Claus Conservatoire of the Hanze University in Graningen) are based in New York. In fact, the septet is filled with modern jazz all-stars including trumpeter Brian Lynch, trombonist Conrad Herwig, tenor saxophonist Don Braden, and drummer Ralph Peterson. They perform a mixture of group originals and standards in styles ranging from hard bop à la Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to a fairly free version of "Take the Coltrane." Each of the players gets featured somewhere along the way with Dena DeRose guesting as a singer on Peterson's "Keep It Simple" and "I'm Old Fashioned" while guitarist Ron Jackson has a tasteful feature on "All My Tomorrows." Nothing all that innovative takes place, but Jazz in Jazz Out gives one a good picture of the modern mainstream of jazz in the early 21st century.
