AllMusic Review by

This budget three-disc box set collects sides John Lee Hooker recorded for the Vee-Jay and Gotham record imprints and includes Hooker classics like "Crawlin' King Snake," "Boogie Chillen'," and "Boom Boom." Hooker wasn't too particular about honoring contracts, but his relationship with Vee-Jay, which lasted from 1955 through 1964, was the closest he came to market stability. These sides have been licensed and issued in countless configurations over the years by dozens of different labels, so nothing here is too difficult to find. The problem with this set is one of duplication, with multiple versions of songs like "House Rent Boogie" and "Maudie," and in the case of "Onions," repeats of the exact same recording.
