Intercity is an almost-collaboration between figures in the younger generation of Japanese avant-garde and free jazz composers -- their self-titled recording offers a sparse solo piece for each (there's not much actual "collaboration," per se), some of which develop into fuller atmospheres or move through jazz spheres. The lineup is as follows: guitarist Takagi Sugimoto contributes two tracks, while sax player Masahiko Okura, trumpeter Kozo Ikeno, bassist Tamaru, and guitarist Akifumi Imaizumi each contributes one. Each soloes on his own instrument, and adds a layer of effects and manipulations as well -- two of the best results are the third piece (Okura's), which has a traditionally smoky jazz feel, and the sixth, on which Imaizumi conjures exquisite guitar tones.
