Here, Keith Jarrett, sometime classical musician, strikes up quite a nice partnership with the Danish-born recorder virtuoso Michala Petri in the complete cycle of Handel's six tuneful recorder sonatas. More so than in his Bach recording with Kim Kashkashian, Jarrett is an animated participant in the dialogue with the melody instrument, commenting, interlacing, giving the recorder firm rhythmic support. Petri is extraordinary; her technically fearless, sweet-toned playing loaded with bounce, lilt, and delectably executed ornaments on the wing. Though the ECM recording team, with label chief Manfred Eicher producing, is in place for this session at Jarrett's Cavelight Studios, this disc appears on the RCA Victor label in deference to Petri's contract.
