From the archives of the MGM vaults comes the CD debut of the full score to 1947's Good News, the second (and most successful) cinematic adaptation of the 1927 Broadway hit. Despite the lightweight plot, the film produced a memorable if not exceptional soundtrack -- which up to this point had only been represented in a decidedly slipshod manner. In the story, Peter Lawford (Tommy Marlowe) is a university football VIP at Tait College. He is, for lack of a better term, the Big Man on Campus who is fawned over by female coeds, sans (of course) Patricia Marshall (Pat McClellan), whose prim and proper upbringing deters Lawford at every turn. When he seeks advice and tutoring from June Allyson (Connie Lane), the two inadvertently fall for each other, until a jealous Marshall throws a monkey wrench into their plans. The movie was scripted by the formidable team of Adolph Green and Betty Comden, who brought to life On the Town (1949), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and The Band Wagon (1953). They weave a similar magic into the lovely and sentimental numbers "Lucky in Love" and "The Best Things in Life Are Free." True to form, "French Lesson," the energetic frivolity of "Pass That Peace Pipe," and "The Varsity Drag" are the very stuff that made MGM musicals such an iconic part of the 20th century motion picture experience. Although not in a starring role, Mel Tormé (Danny) makes one of his earliest singing celluloid appearances in the flick and is heard on the reprisal of both "Lucky in Love" and "Just Imagine." He even teams up with Lawford on "The Best Things in Life Are Free." The contents have been digitally remastered from audio elements that have certainly aged well and the extras include a never before available promotional interview with Allyson by Dick Simmons as well as readings of the title song and "The Varsity Drag" taken from the collectible 1930 version of Good News, with Dorothy McNulty (Flo) leading the assembled cast.
