Beginning life as a 1944 novella by Colette, Gigi was adapted into a 1951 play by Anita Loos, then into a 1958 musical film by Alan Jay Lerner with its music by Lerner and Frederick Loewe. The 2015 Broadway show revives a 1973 stage musical based on the film. Starring Vanessa Hudgens in the title role, the revival opened at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre in April 2015. The cast recording also includes the Tony-nominated featured actress Victoria Clark, Corey Cott, Dee Hoty, Steffanie Leigh, Howard McGillin, loads of Paris flavor, and the musical's best-known song, "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," performed here by Clark and Hoty instead of by McGillin's Honoré. Oh là là, times have changed since Maurice Chevalier's heyday. Produced by Grammy-winner Frank Filipetti, Gigi [2015 Cast Recording] includes all of the film version's songs plus six tunes written for (two cut from) the original stage musical, also from Lerner and Loewe. It was released for digital download by DMI Soundtracks in May and on CD by Warner Elektra Atlantic in June of 2015.
