Another collection of pop grooves to file alongside Bureau B’s Sprechen Sie Pop? and Achtung! German Grooves (as well as the original Funky Fraüleins), Funky Fraüleins, Vol. 2 includes 17 tracks of female-fronted, German-language pop from the ‘70s and late ‘60s (plus two tracks from the ‘80s), emphasizing the vocal/pop crossover at its most exploitative (and fun). German pop stars of the time actually aren’t represented well -- these are more about the producers than the vocalists -- although Joy Fleming, Uschi Brüning, and actress Hildegard Knef make appearances. The non-German appearances are more famous (and slightly more interesting), coming from Caterina Valente, Peggy March (after she dropped the “Little”), and a pre-fame Donna Summer (billed as Donna Gaines), the latter doing a track called “Can’t Understand” (the song, a B-side, was recorded in 1968 after she appeared in the German production of Hair). Given the high quality of these tracks, there must be a wealth of undiscovered nuggets still available, although it’ll be DJs and obscure collectors who appreciate these tracks the most.
