The recordings were made by Cuban ethnomusicologists in 1982 and 1983. Side one contains Big Drum songs while side two has quadrille and string band selections (calypso, waltz, and parang or Christmas songs). Most performers are identified except Lucien Duncan on some of the Big Drum recordings made in Six Roads village. The notes are good but some of the titles of the selections are misidentified: for example, the Temne song is actually a Cromanti ("Kromantin").
