The last installment in the label Dreams by Degrees' Seasons series of 10" EPs introduced the new and improved Loquat, once a trip-pop duo that reinvented itself -- for the better -- into an acoustic pop quintet. The three original songs included here show excellent songwriting and arrangement skills. They are catchy but intelligent and they speak to the soul. Singer Kylee Swenson is mostly responsible for the charm of this outfit. Her voice brings to mind Edie Brickell, a feeling enhanced by the all-acoustic instrumentation and the nubile quality of the melodies. "Internal Crash," featuring only Swenson's voice, Earl Otsuka's guitar and Ben Kasman's piano trickles provides the highlight, but "Swingset Chain" and "Friend Without Thumbs" are also very good, witty numbers. Sadly, the EP is rounded up with a house remix of "Swingset Chain." Predictable and almost offensive in the context of what came before it, it shatters all the playful charm of the original.
