Dutch post-hardcore/rock five-piece Oil follows up its debut Definition Delta with this five-song EP that furthers its rock purist legitimacy in the world of Scandinavian hair boy contemporaries like the Hives. Lead singer Nicholas VanDen Doel carries a bit of Ian MacKaye in his voice over the hard, defining melodies of twin guitars that vaguely pay homage to idols Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy. Taut, springy basslines drive this pop-metal sound reminiscent of the trademark production work of Steve Albini. "Scrape," the final track of the EP, is a Deadstoolpigeon cover, which pays respect to producer Menno Bakker (formerly NRA, Seein Red, Human Alert, and Deadstoolpigeon). The deep sludge bass of the track suggests Oil's fence-riding between post-hardcore, switch time melodicism, and more traditional metal atmospherics.
