This CD was released in conjunction with a slim beginners book called Dixieland - The Birth of Jazz. Unfortunately the packaging on the CD is sparse (with no recording dates or personnel listing). The historic music, 13 numbers with more than its share of classics, is excellent but all of the performances are available in more complete form elsewhere. Included are recordings by Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds, King Oliver, the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, the McKenzie-Condon Chicagoans, Sidney Bechet with Clarence Williams and the only two cuts from later than the 1920s: Bunk Johnson and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
