Among the very best recordings cut by Count Basie's orchestra in the '40s are the V Discs they recorded exclusively for distribution to servicemen. The first of two volumes, the 11 performances on this LP are quite inspired with Harry Edison, Dickie Wells, Lester Young (during the half when he is present), Buddy Tate and Lucky Thompson taking heated solos. This version of "Taps Miller" is a real classic; there are no weak cuts on this excellent set.
