Conjunction is a double CD of dark ambience and malevolent minimalism from Anthony Paul Kerby, aka the Circular Ruins. The discs are subtitled "Penumbra" and "Umbra." The interrelationship between the discs is progressive, exponential, and surreal. "Penumbra" is the dark ambient disc. It is not dark ambient in the sense of that style of music. Rather, it is ambient music with dark timbres, textures, and drones. Kerby uses some seriously warped and manipulated vocal samples to complement those drones. The slow pace and the orchestral passages add to the eerie atmospheres. Some of the experimental sounds and manipulations border on dissonance, adding flavor to the proceedings. Then "Umbra" sets down! This goes beyond dark to the malevolent minimalist zone. That is a fair description of this disc. Kerby continues the journey that will stop on the banks of the River Styx at Charon's ferry. He does not take listeners onto the ferry but allows them to admire the view and go further if they choose. This disc is Charon's Muzak. It is as dark as dark gets. This set will appeal to fans of Rapoon, Lustmord, and Isomorph.
