AllMusic Review by

Hokum was a likable genre of music that usually featured vocals full of humorous double entendres dealing with sex, drinking and drugs; fairly basic chord changes, often similar to those employed on "It's Tight Like That"; and consistently hot and cheerful solos. The Hokum Boys (who were a different group than the Famous Hokum Boys) was a name used for several different bands during hokum's heyday. This CD has the 25 titles recorded by the Hokum Boys (two were released as being by the Down Home Boys) in 1929. The groups were usually trios or duets and featured such musicians as vocalist/clarinetist Bob Robinson, pianists Alex Hill and Jimmy Blythe, and guitarist/vocalist Ikey Robinson. Although there is a certain sameness to the music, the performances are quite enjoyable and sometimes include funny lyrics. Among the selections included on this comprehensive CD are "Caught Him Doing It," "Somebody's Been Using That Thing," "You Can't Get Enough of That Stuff," "I Was Afraid of That," "The Folks Down Stairs," and "It's All Gone Now." Fun music.
