"Classic" is an accurate description of the music on this LP. The great tenor Coleman Hawkins is heard in peak form on a quartet set with pianist Eddie Heywood, bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Shelly Manne, particularly during a brilliant version of "The Man I Love." Hawk is almost as creative on a septet date with trumpeter Bill Coleman and pianst Ellis Larkins, roaring on "Hawkins' Barrel House" and "Stumpy." The other four selections feature the equally great tenor Lester Young, interacting with trumpeter Bill Coleman and trombonist Dickie Wells. "I Got Rhythm" finds Prez at his best and Wells's high-note work on "I'm Fer It Too" is both humorous and memorable. This classic set has since been reissued on CD.
