Cianan is an Australian Celtic group, based in Perth. A three-piece group in 2001 (after Matt Pickford opted out in 2000), the lineup includes Justin Pickford, Isabella Jennings, and Dean Usher. They perform both traditional Celtic music with modern arrangements, and original songs by Justin Pickford, particularly "Dark River Reels," and Castle Path. While their original material is pleasant, they give their most notable performances on modern arrangements of traditional tunes. "King of the Pipers" is an enjoyable example, as is "Black Is the Color," and fans of modern Celtic will likely find themselves playing these again. They lilt pleasingly on the ear. "Butterfly Set" starts a slow rendition of this popular favorite -- pleasant sound, but the pace is perhaps a bit more deliberate than listeners may be accustomed to. Then about midway along, the tempo picks up and becomes quite brisk, and lively as anybody could wish. Overall, a pleasing arrangement. This is an engaging debut album.
