AllMusic Review by

Café Après-midi: Nacre ranks among the most eclectic entries in a series virtually defined by its diversity and unpredictability -- handed the keys to the vast Capitol vaults, compiler Toru Hashimoto makes room for both the Beach Boys and Miles Davis, deftly bobbing and weaving his way through a collection of tracks that reads like a multi-car pileup but plays like a dream. Hashimoto frontloads Café Après-midi: Nacre with a series of Brazilian cuts from the likes of Dóris Monteiro and Marcos Valle, before taking the plunge, changing up from New Wavers China Crisis to pop songstress Jackie DeShannon and beyond -- it's fascinating to hear songs of such far-ranging vintage and approach blend together so seamlessly, creating a unified sound that's effortlessly breezy and light. Other highlights include the Sugar Shoppe's "Papa, Won't You Let Me Go to Town with You," Gerry Mulligan's "Nights at the Turntable" and Duke Pearson's "Lamento."
