Perhaps because it borders on Scotland, Northumberland has a stronger instrumental tradition than most of England, including a small, delicate-sounding local bagpipe. The musicians here -- farmers, many of them -- play fiddle, harmonica, whistle, Northumbrian pipes, and accordion. These are all nonvocals and mostly dance pieces.
