AllMusic Review by

Little-known French composer Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was in fact among the most prolific French composers of the late Baroque and early Classical periods. His output consisted of every popular genre from opera to smaller chamber works. As was fashionable at the time, many of his works were published with suggested alternate instrumentation to make them more accessible to a wider range of consumers. The six cello sonatas heard on this Quill Classics album, for example, listed the viol or bassoon as being able to sit in for the cello. Cellist David Bakamjian is joined by members of Brooklyn Baroque for a valiant attempt to resurrect Boismortier's works for cello. Accompanied by various combination of Baroque flute, harpsichord, Baroque cello, and viola da gamba, Bakamjian performs with fluid elegance and austere pacing. His tone is clear and resonating, providing a beautiful contrast to the nicely subdued accompanying instruments. Clear differences in character can be heard from one sonata to the next, especially when Boismortier moves to the darker, more petulant minor keys. While these sonatas may not be a revolutionary contribution to the literature, they nevertheless fill a gap in French compositions for the instrument and demonstrate the prevailing movement from Baroque to Classical trends.
