AllMusic Review by

Blues Classics is a three-disc box set that attempts to tell the history of the blues over the course of its 72 tracks. In a way, it does offer a good sampler. Drawing from tracks recorded between 1927 and 1969, many major artists are featured: Muddy Wateres, Howlin' Wolf, Roosevelt Sykes, B.B. King, Lonnie Johnson, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bobby Bland, Etta James and John Lee Hooker are all featured, among many others. The catch is, several very, very important figures didn't make the cut -- there's no Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Magic Sam, etc. -- even it is probably because of legal rights. Furthermore, the selected tracks aren't always the best choices. Neverthless, Blues Classics does contain a lot of excellent performances and, in its own way, offers a good introduction to genre for neophytes, even if it is bound to frustrate collectors.
