Rio carnival aside, Brazil is full of African-derived percussion. Batucada descends directly from the social dances permitted slaves once a week; batucada is a dynamite percussion music. This release focuses on batucadas for drums leavened by the whistles beloved also of African drum choirs, passages of fine cavaquinho (a small guitar) and manic, squeaky-squeak cuica friction drum. Maddeningly generic packaging, but this really is the best Brazilian percussion release I've met these many years, with technical quality as sparkling as the drumming.
