AllMusic Review by

Kimi Reith perpetuates an unconstrained musical dialogue with her jazz guitar, bassist Bruce Grafrath, and drummer Kevin Green on her debut recording, titled Bail! Recorded in late 1999 to document her ensemble work with Grafrath, these ten compositions represent a mix of Reith's original inspirations alongside the sole cover -- Monk's "Epistrophy." The songs include intervallic variations, blues forms, and harmonic diversions that are not only listenable, but also enjoyable. The recording opens with "Gargantua," whose 22-bar head features odd progressions and rhythmic displacement. She simplifies the piece to 24 bars on the improvised solo and segues into the title track, "Bail," which is a 12-bar piece in two meters. Reith's adept finger work on her hollow-body electric guitar captures the breadth and depth of each composition's melodic and harmonic ideas quite well and provides the listener with an excellent hour of fine musical thoughts. Kimi Reith is a bright new star on the jazz horizon.
