This is a collection of obscure techno tracks originally released on vinyl by the Audio.NL label. If this set is any indication, the current direction of the European underground dance music scene is chilly, minimalist, and glitchy. Not downtempo, really; in fact, every track here clocks in at right around 125 bpm. But almost every one consists of little more than a soft, computerized house beat that unfolds (sometimes at maddening length) with only the subtlest rhythmic shift or textural development. In several cases, such as Radboud Mens' hypnotically fascinating "BIgBeatMixDown" and Static's abstractly swinging "Dub Bashet," there's just enough variation to hold your interest while you slip into an uneasy trance; but in other cases, like Komet's "Gen" and Slo-Fi's absurdly drawn-out and uneventful "*3," there's simply nothing there. Recommended to those who already know they love this stuff; others may want to start elsewhere.
