AllMusic Review by

Though it contains Johnny Mathis' two most successful singles, "Chances Are" and "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late," as well as seven of his other chart hits, the budget-priced, 36-track, triple-CD/double-cassette compilation All-Time Favorites! does not qualify as a hits collection. Rather, it selects tracks mostly from Mathis' albums released between 1957 and 1984, focusing on the ballads, many of them drawn from stage musicals and movies, that are his specialty. Twenty-three of the selections date from 1957-59, the peak period of Mathis' commercial success on records. (Indeed, eight are drawn from a single album, 1957's Warm.) The discs are subtitled "Stage & Screen Favorites," "Love Songs," and "After Hours," but in practice there is no real difference in selection, with show tunes like "Moanin' Low" and "The Party's Over" turning up on the third disc rather than the first. In fact, the sequencing is virtually random, and none the worse for that. After all, this no-frills release (which you are more likely to find in a mail-order catalog than a record store) is intended as background music for a romantic evening, not as a comprehensive retrospective on the artist. And for that, it's fine.
