Barry Romberg's Random Access is an intriguing septet that features particularly strong soloists in trumpeter Kevin Turcotte and saxophonist Kelly Jefferson. This live set has the group playing two freely improvised pieces (which sound surprisingly well-organized and logical) plus three loosely frameworked tunes which set up the drummer-leader. The music ranges from fusion to post-bop, free jazz to advanced hard bop and yet has a strong unity about it. It is a major success that there are no real meandering or aimless moments considering how free the playing is; one never loses interest in where the music might be going. The musicians listen closely to each other and different players take the leads in different spots. So despite the odds against it, Accidental Beef is a success on all levels.
